I made some Fizzies, with citric acid, cornstarch, and baking soda. I scented them with lavender essential oil, they smelled great, but they had gray spots! I never used anything to color them. (so they were white with gray spots!) What could of caused the spots? Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks, The Soap Corner.

Hi:
Welcome to the Soapmaking forum! I am not sure what caused the spots. Lets see what you used that could have contributed to the spotty finshed product. The essential oil for one is a natural product and could have contributed to the spots. Also, if the fizzies were exposed to other products or damp air it could have precipitated that reaction on the outside. Another thing that can contribute to product degradation is using tap water instead of distilled water.

what are the identifying characteristic of the gray spots? Are they moldy in nature? Do you think that next time you make them that instead of leaving them uncolored, maybe think of adding dried botanicals or embellishments to cover the imperfections?

Some good embellishments are cake and pastry embellishments... like those sold at Wilton.

Sometimes products turn out with imperfections and we never know why. What you could do is to make a small batch again and see how that turns out. If the second batch has the problem with the spots then you can change some of the ingredients or your source where you bought your supplies.
