My girlfriend works at a cafe. On Valentine's Day, she asked one of the regular customers what he and his wife had planned. The gentleman replied that he and his wife were so busy with their two young kids that they hadn't even thought about doing something special.
I thought of all the things my girlfriend and I were able to do on Valentine's day since we don't have and never will have kids around our neck. We both worked all day but together we:
1) cooked a healthy, hearty meal. We made linguini with a white cream sauce with mushrooms and artichoke hearts and steamed some vegetables. 2) We got to love on each other while dinner was cooking. 3) We dined by candlelight to the music of our choosing. 4) We each got to enjoy our favorite things. I did the dinner dishes so my girlfriend could have extra time to draw before bedtime. In the morning before work, I did 2 hikes up/runs down the slopes of the local ski area.
None of the above would have been possible if the responsibilities involving kids were involved. Anyone else have a fun Valentine's day experience to tell.

My husband and I exchanged cards. He brought me flowers. We got dressed and went out to dinner. Had sushi, drank a bottle of plum wine....walked around with our dog. The only kids in our Valentines Day were the ones other people brought to dinner with them...how romantic not. Parent really need to learn how to hire babysitters when they go out to dinner. We really don't appreciate having our dinner ruined by a screaming baby or kids running around the restaurant. My parents always left us and home and couldn't wait to get out by themselves, it seemed. When did the "inmates" start running the asylum?

We went on the "Sweetheart's" cruise around San Diego Bay for 2.5 hours. We had the most delicious dinner (steak that melts in your mouth, HUGE shrimp, and toffeed rice).
Of course, since this was a romantic cruise for couples, there were no kids - everything was quiet and peaceful. Loved it!!!

I had the day off (huge snowstorm here in New England). My hubby, however, is a USPS city letter carrier, and of course had to work!
He drove to work, stopping for a snack on the way. When he came out, his truck wouldn't start. He called me to come and get him. He was close enough to work that he almost could have walked to work from there, but he needed a working car to get him home at the end of the day, when she snow was likely to have really piled up (it did).
He called me at 7 am, getting me out of bed for what I thought was going to be a nice late sleep. I put some big old boots and a huge parka on over my PJs, and headed down to get him. What normally would have been a 20-minute drive took twice as long. Then he drove me back to the house and headed back to work. <sheeesh> In the meantime, he'd made calls and arranged to get the truck towed to the garage.
He was *very* upset (late to work, more repair work on the truck --- which he only drives in the snow, for plowing the driveway, and for trips to the dump, since it only gets 12 mpg! --- it's a "yard truck" for sure, a used 90s-era American model). He alternated between saying "I don't wanna talk about it" in a frustrated tone and just silently holding my hand.
Later that evening, he was grateful and cuddly. Talking on the phone with pals, he called me his "rescue wife".
Not very romantic, but...pretty damned real!

We were snowed in - not completely, but enough - here in OH. My mom was with us because of the snow (her county was in a "do not drive" snow emergeny, so she was staying with us). DH worked half day and brought a nice box of candy home to both my mom and me (I thought it was pretty nice of him to include her). We had a great homemade meal and just hung out in the evening with our critters. Certainly not earth-shaking, but after all, we can create a romantic evening just about any night we want!

My husband and I had our Valentine's tonight, since he had a class on Wednesday night and we both work days. We went to a nice dinner at Carrabba's, an Italian restaurant. It was very pleasant. I do agree with PMO, though, why can't people get babysitters? I saw one couple near our table with an obviously bored toddler in a highchair, and as we left, I saw a woman waiting for a table vigorously "rocking" a large baby, which was very sleepy (it was almost 8:00pm). I couldn't figure out WHY she and her husband/baby father had decided to drag the poor tired kid out to a crowded restaurant on a busy Friday night, when the baby would obviously have been much more comfortable in his own crib, with the parents dining on takeout instead! Babysitter would have been a great option, if the parents really wanted to go to a nice restaurant. I don't get why parents continue to try to live their pre-child lives, and drag the kids along to places they really aren't suited for.

Mike-
My husband and I also made a very nice dinner. I make a very good homemade bruschetta, we had tortellini, and then a cake to top it off. It was our 3rd "engagement" anniversary. (We've never really celebrated Valentine's Day, so when we happened to get married on Valentine's Day Michigan time, we decided that we could celebrate it every year instead of Valentine's Day!)

We also had a nice time- dinner at home in front of the fireplace.
My sister and brother-in-law (who have two small kids) did nothing. Now they're not really into V-Day, but still... interesting.
