I made some tatted stars out of size 30 cotton and would like to starch them. what would you suggest I use? I tried sugar starch but found it made them heavy and seemed too much for them. maybe I should of used just a spray starch? Can you please help I would like to stiffen these to put in some christmas cards.

I like Stiffy and I once received a very pretty star which had been stiffened with glittery clear nail polish. Worked a treat!

I did try sugar starch - once - and like you I did not care for the results. Spray starch would not stiffen the stars enough unless you used a lot.

I will try that I wanted something I was sure would wash out so they could be redone.I will read the label and see if this will wash out. I have heard of white glue watered down but I don't think this will wash out.

I tried "Aleene's Stiffen Quik", but instead of spraying, I poured some into a small flat container and soaked the snowflakes in it. Then I blotted them with a paper towel and dried them on waxed paper. They are not as stiff as with the sugar starch, but stiff enough to hold shape, and the sheen of the thread is not obscured.

Sugar starch does not work well in the south or anywhere there is high humidity. I've used white glue mixed equal parts water and it worked fantastic on crocheted snowflakes! Doubt tatted stars would be much difference... Definitely a method I'll use again smile
