Hello, June and other posters on this board. I am new to Tarot (also to this forum) and am really curious about learning the ins and outs of reading Tarot.

There's also something I've been researching that I was wondering if you have an answer to... is there any one card, or any combination in a three-card spread, that would indicate a woman having a miscarriage?

I've been reading through June's primer and I know that the cups represent fertility. I also saw online that the nine of swords has the word "miscarriage" associated with it, but I'm not sure if that's just a miscarriage in the general sense -- not the fertility sense -- of the word.

Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

HI Robin,

The nine of swords is sometimes associated with this, but my interpretation is:

The Nine of Swords speaks of emotional troubles of a psychological nature, born of our fears and self doubts. In reality, there may not be any reason for this suffering, except for the person's inner demons. This card warns us to abandon negative thinking, and to believe and have faith in our future, based on our positivity and ability to manifest clear, concrete goals and visions. We need to move beyond the inner dialogue that tells us that we 'can't' and embrace wholeheartedly the notions of hope, fortitude and achievement.

As far as a miscarriage goes, I would say it is pertinent more to the child's soul progress rather than the mother and father. So, a reading should be done for the child.

Happy New Year,
June

You might like to look into the Tarot code of ethics on pregnacy and miscarriages. As it is unethical to predict miscarriages pregnancies deaths and other misfortunes. I never predict these things or bring them into my readings.

why would you want to predict a miscarriage anyway?

sorry I can't help as it's against my code of ethics.

Personally, I have never heard the 9 of Swords being associated with miscarriage. It's more a card of personal torment--anxiety attacks, hypochondria, worrying about things that may happen (often without any concrete evidence), etc.

If I even *thought* I saw a health issue like miscarriage in a reading, I'd never speak it. You can get in major trouble advising in areas of medicine, law, or psychotherapy.

Having said that, for study/theoretical purposes, I would think tha the three cards that *could* indicate miscarriage would be:

Empress + Tower + 3 of Swords.

(Empress/pregnancy, Tower/sudden calamity, and 3 of Swords/grief).

Just my take...

Thanks very much for the advice -- and prism, don't worry, I'm actually writing a book about Tarot... it's fiction, and the person doing the reading doesn't know what she's doing. Personally, I'm also real novice at this and would never presume to tell someone anything like this.

I appreciate all the feedback!
