I am about half way through reading the novel, "Our Nig," by Harriet E. Wilson of Milford, New Hampshire. She is considered to be the first African-American writer to have a novel published in the United States. She paid for the publishing herself at a time that she could least afford it, as a single mother. She had been an indentured servant, given away by her own mother, at age six.
The novel is thought to contain autobiographical details of her abuse at the hands of the family she served, and in a sense, it joins the "slave narrative" genre. This book is certainly worth reading. My husband and I visited the statue that has been erected in her memory and took pictures of it (the sculptor created a beautiful image, based solely on Harriet's own descriptions of herself in the book).
