Betta fish have been known to make various sounds. Fish in general make a lot of sounds, but most of them we can't hear - mostly just other fish hear them. I have heard popping and splashing mostly - at various levels of volume and different frequencies (some more high-pitched or low-pitched).

What about you? What kind of noises have you heard your Betta fish make?

Has anyone heard a chirp?

Wanted to add that Betta Fish are little individuals, as Betta parents know, and well... sometimes their endearing personalities also really amaze us and fill us with wonder! Let's start a journal here of all the sounds your fish make and you can also write what your thoughts are on that particular sound - why your fishie made that sound and if you've ever heard it before and how many times. Is your fish trying to communicate with you and what do you think it is?....

This could be helpful to others who are wondering what is up with that bubbling, splashing, flipping, barking, chirping, scratching, vocalizing fishie they are friends with!

Dolphins make a chirping sound! Of course, dolphins are mammals, but I've often thought that there is a similarity between dolphins and many Betta fish! They are both intelligent, great communicators, and love to jump out of the water!

My Betta fish doesn't chirp or make much sound at all, but whenever he snaps at his food you can always hear this little noise. I cannot tell if he's making the noise, or the water!

I hear spalshing noises from time to time, and I hear almost like the sound of bubbles popping, but not much else. Toby is a rather calm Betta fish, but he has his moments of energy.

I have a clown loach that makes a clicking noise. When I hear that noise i always know that he is digging around in the gravel. He is such a character. He always gives me a fright when he sleeps on his side. And one of my angels is his buddy, they swim together and he makes a big circle around the angel. Hmm, hopefully that is playing! Sometimes he swims with the catfish when they are playing follow the leader.

I'm not sure that they sleep on their side. That doesn't sound like a good sign. He may not be sleeping.

What a great story about how the buddies swim together. It's like the true story of the goldfish whose buddy bumps him up to the top of the tank so he can eat! True friendship exists between fish!

Loaches laying on their side is a normal loach behavior. I always think he is pretty happy when I catch him doing it. I hadn't seen him doing it for a while and then I built him a cave to hide in and that is where I can see him doing this. He is about 2 years old now and I have read that they can live 10 years. I would love to have some more.

Wow, that is a neat story - How did you build the cave? I like the quote - a good thought to keep in mind. : )

I went to the local nursery and they have tons of rock for sale. I had researched to find out what kind of rocks were safe for aquarium use. I have a big tub full of these rocks and when I change the water I change around the rocks and make little caves and hidey holes. I also bought a couple of pvc plumming pipes (an elbow and then a few different sized little pieces) that are grey and my catfish and loach love to hide in these. Sometimes I use them as the entrance to the caves. I will have to get my son to take some photos to post. I am currently recouperating from a broken ankle and so I am not real speedy!
