So I just have to vent...

Last night my husband and I went to the bar with some friends. There was a couple there who had an INFANT (like 3 months old or less) sitting there in her little carrier. In a smoke-filled bar! With really loud rock music playing! It really bothered me. Cigarette smoke is bad for everyone, but babies' lungs are still growing! And that kid's poor little ears! Oh, and both parents had a 2 big beers as well. So they probably drove home buzzed.

I was so tempted to march over and read them the riot act for bringing their infant to a bar...but my husband and friends said that it wouldn't do any good, which was probably true.

WHY WHY WHY do people do dumb stuff like that!? I find it hard to believe that they haven't heard that cigarette smoke is bad, especially for children. There are ads on TV, radio, and billboards about this kind of thing. Is it that they're dumb, or they just don't care because Mommy and Daddy really want a beer?

That sucks. I wish people would take an honest look at their lifestyles BEFORE making babies. If you're a beer-swilling, chain-smoking barfly -- fine. Own it. But please be a decent human being and leave innocent children out of it.

I think some people just want to carry on with their lives the way they were before children which just cannot happen.

Excellent point, Babak. The bartender and manager should not have allowed it.

In my city (Indianapolis, Indiana, USA) there is a smoking ordinance that basically says there is no smoking in any restaurants unless it is a 21 and over bar; this effectively prevents anyone under 21 from being exposed to cigarette smoke in restaurants, bars, and clubs.

Under this law, a bar that allows smoking would not be permitted to allow anyone under 21 inside; no underage teenagers, no kids, no babies.

Besides this, it is a personal belief of mine that one should never drink in front of children. (It is taboo in my family.)

I think this is a bit odd and I would not bring a baby to a bar but Im not sure I think parents shoudl never drink in front of their kids, smoking is a bit different. They may not have been driving. Also in Europe and many other countries parents regulalry drink aroudn thier kids/ Also when I was in Ireland I saw many kids in pubs with their parents. Pubs are more of a family atmosphere there then a bar. I do think you need to change your life when you have kids but I dont think their should be a law banning kids from pubs, I used to eat dinner wiht my parents in pubs and I was fine, my parents never had more hten one beer and I enjoyed the music, of course I was older then a baby.

Thanks Xantres

In Iran alcohol is banned legally and nobody allowed drinking it, in fact it has punishment. Beside we havent any pub, disco and night club here.
We have to dink alcohol in our house and parties. In most of party alcohol served and children have seen how their parents drink it. I saw several times children ask this question from elder guy: whats this? I want too and most of the time answer is: its drag and doctor prescript it for me and you can guess, what will be more further questions and at last children find out their parents lie! Lol
In Iran we have a regulation that nobody allows to smoke in public ceiled area as restaurant and shops, although some people has violated it and no any police reaction. My wife hates smokes and cant stay somewhere that some bodys smoking. for this reason she never allow us to go to dancing and night clubs when we travel to abroad. Just she accepts open-air discos and nightclubs.
