Under the expert direction of a friend (Gay) I managed to make my very first birdie boing. Gay supplied the directions (with pictures) and I put it together in an article Bird Toys - Make a BOING.

I decided I'd better try it out myself and managed to make a finch size one for my first effort. You can see Gay's pictures in the article, but here is the picture of my boing.

How many people make toys for their own birds? Do you? If so, what have you made?

My 11YO daughter and I enjoy making toys for our birds. It would be impossible to say what kind we make, because whatever inspires us when we get the toy box out that's what we do. Also, each bird has special likes and dislikes we take into consideration. One thing that we do that may be a little different, is we dehydrate foods and use them as toys. Anything from cranberries to squash (rind, seeds, and all) to banana chips, if we dry them with a round toothpick through, we have a place to string them up. We also have a BIG rubbermaid container full of parts of all shapes and sizes and kinds. Don't think we've ever made the same thing twice.

Dear Mavis,

I hope you can help me asnwer some questions that I have in regards to canaries.
I currently keep my birds outside but I realize that it's too cold now so I'm thinking of moving them into a garage. Now what type of light or lightbuld I should use? and also where can I buy the light with the timer to increase the lenght of time.

Thanks
Jackywu

Mavis, Thanx for the info on how to make a bird "BOING"!!They are so expensive in the stores, as are many toys, so I'm going to get busy and try to make one for my Amazon, Sammy! Some toys I have made for him are: I recycled an old toy (the kind that hangs from the cage with several toys with a wire threaded thru them)by drilling holes thru nylabones(for dogs!)and unpainted wooden blocks and threading the wire thru them. Also made a house for him out of a good sized box with a little door and windows! He loves to go inside and "knock" on the door and climbs thru the windows!!

Way to go Mavis, looks good. I think I will see if I can make one for Maggie and Ink spot.
