I do have an inside source and here is the scoop:

Walmart wants to do away with ANYTHING that requires a "special" person to be there...meaning that Walmart has plans to make everyone in the store "interchangeable", otherwise there will be no need to have to schedule someone to work in fabrics and that is why layaway was shut down. (hope I explained that well enough). They do have a new person running things and this is the first of I'm sure many changes. Party supplies will be moved into the craft section. For me this could mean a good thing...maybe we will get a Joanns built here.

You do realize the consequences of making all their employees interchangeable with no jobs requiring any special knowledge? No need to pay anyone in accord with specialist skills. No need to pay anyone more than minimum wage. It's worse for the customer, too. Sure, they pay less for what they buy, but there will be more wasted purchases, most of which, people will not bother to return. Walmart is a blight on American commerce.

The other thing it means is that stores like JoAnn's will have absolutely no incentive to hold the prices down on their material...which is already sky high here in WV. It is no rumor, ladies. Wal-Mart is, indeed, doing away with the bolts of fabric. If it isn't self-service, they aren't going to have it. That's pretty much the new corporate philosophy.

i have talked with people who work there that i have known now for a few years. some of the walmarts are doing away with their fabrics but not all, it kind of depends on the store manager, in my area we have 2 walmarts with 2 more being built, one is a super walmart, it IS doing away with fabrics, then the 2nd one which is soon going to be a super walmart is NOT doing away with fabrics. i really believe it depends on location. some of the ones i know that are by places like joanns are closing, others aren't
since sam walton died things have changed alot. i wish it was a better place for employees as well as shoppers.i don;t shop there all the time but i do shop enough to save myself considerable amounts of money although lately i have seen the sm is getting higher priced than the grocery stores here, if that becomes the case i of course will not continue to shop there or anywhere that prices are inflated on things, mostly i shop at costco, now i wish they would get a yarn section,. that would be awesome

OT re: Walmart (for merwyn)

Watch out for your area. Walmart has a history of opening several Walmarts near each other, pretty much wiping out most of the other local businesses, then closing all but the "super-Walmart" putting all the other Walmart employees, along with all those who used to be employeed by the local businesses, out of work. Then, just to top the whole thing off, they will not let the buildings left over from the ones they close be used for retail in any way. Of course, that's the use they were designed for and the only use there is for them, so they just sit there, a blight on the landscape.

The Wal-Mart South of us has already lost its fabric and has a tiny craft section. Our Wal-Mart will loose the fabric and most of the crafts in the 08 store redo. On Penny knits blog, she said it had started in Flordia. My friend in Il. has lost the fabric and has just a tiny craft section. I was told all new stores will be built with no craft section. the old stores will be a small section of crafts.

Wal-mart employees will now be required to wear a uniform of sorts they are given just two shirts and must buy the tan pants. It will be a hardship for many manking mim wage. The stockers get very dirty, but no jeans anymore. The computers will tell you when you work (this was on cnn) The newsperson I remember saying what about babysitters for they are to be called in when needed.

I don't have money to toss around. I liked buying fabric and yarn cheap because I donate things and want all I can get for my money. I have a DD in Grad school my last child in school (3) ... enough said. I am saying this I will make an effort not to go to Wal-Mart. I also think it is a done deal although calling can't hurt.
