You're right. DMOZ has been down for many months. They have a
DMOZ forum where many people have been asking when they are going to be accepting applications again, and the bottom line is "they are working on it, but they really don't know when it will be up again".
I have personally submitted site suggestions for at least a dozen different well designed and informative websites, and NONE of them have ever been accepted. On the DMOZ site, they say it could take up to two weeks before they review your submission, but other sources say it can be as long as two years. I have pretty much given up on DMOZ. When it was possible to submit, the experts said "submit it and then forget about it". I suppose there is a slight chance that one of the overworked volunteers might eventually review one of my submissions, but I'm not going to hold my breath.
They say Google gets a great deal of content from the listings of DMOZ (as well as many other sites and directories).
I think at one time, years ago, when DMOZ was not nearly as large, it was possible to submit a site and actually get reviewed and even accepted. If fact, back then, the editors of DMOZ actually went looking for sites to include, even if they never sent in a submission.
Two of my clients, who have had their sites online for many years, were lucky enough to have been included in the DMOZ directory, without having ever sent in a submission.
Today however, the editors are so back logged with hundreds of thousands of submissions, there seems to be little chance of ever getting included.
Although unfortunate and frustrating, it is probably best to look elswhere for exposure on the web.
