It seems to me that in our hustle, bustle fast food, convenience store lives, we have forgotten an important aspect of our lives. In days of old, Sundays and holidays were considered to be days of rest, and even if you didn't happen to go to church or you weren't religious, they were days that were spent with families and friends. They were the days that families sat together, talked to each other, visited friends, and read books or otherwise occupied their time.
What if our society went back to that and all the businesses closed down on Sundays? Would that be such a bad thing? I work in retail and I am lucky enough to have a boss who lets me have Sundays off, but I also volunteer to work on Thanksgiving and Christmas Day so that the people with small children and families coming in from out of town can have that day off.
Do you think it is right for a retail business to ask its employees to work on a recognized holiday like Thanksgiving or Christmas, or should those be sacred days spent with families and friends?
What do you think?
