Okay folks, your new, but old and jaded, Philosophy editor has finally found a topic that intrigues him.

A Merriam-Webster online survey has thrown up the word "truthiness" as word of the year. It's apparently defined by satirist Stephen Colbert as "truth that comes from the gut, not books."

Can any Comedy Central fans enlighten me? <img src="/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Haven't a clue, but (and I'm only guessing) how about.....

Truth from a book:
" I feel really uncomfortable when you come home late at night, smelling of alcohol and perfume, and you tell me you've been working late at the office.... I fel slighted and insecure, and wonder if our relationship is valuable to you...."

Truth from the Gut:
"You come home in the early hours of the morning, reeking of cheap scent and booze, and expect me to swallow the 'late at the office' line? Whaddya think I am, some [censored] kind of walkover? get the hell out of here!"

Actually, having looked at an article on wikipedia,it's not that at all....

Its actually much more sinister.... almost like fervent,fanatical fundamentalist evangelical on-tv Christianity, in flavour.... <img src="/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

"Truthiness" smacks of the passive-agressive from where I'm sitting.

If you want to know what God thinks of money, just look at the people he gave it to.

It sounds silly. Either it is truth or false. "Truthiness" implies that it is "sorta" the truth. Either it is or it is not.
