I had my nose pierced exactly 6 weeks ago. I didn't have any problems with it for the first 3 weeks - no pain, no swelling, I thought I had this thing in the bag.

Around the 3 1/2 week mark, I used some Dial Complete that was scented. I normally have very sensitive skin (like to scented soaps, perfumes, etc) and immediately that same day my piercing became inflamed. It got pretty red and itchy. Well... at one point without thinking I scratched the piercing. It was a screw so it only came out to the bend. I pushed it back in and thought everything was ok, but from that point on the piercing would bleed at random times during the day. Bright red blood, no pus or anything like that.

After a few days of this I went back to the shop where I'd been pierced & they took a look and said everything looked ok. Just keep cleaning it and it will be fine. Sure enough, for the next week things were fine.

But about 5 days ago things started to go wrong again. This time, not only was their bleeding, but a little red raised ridge around one side of the stud. I panicked and reacted by not washing the stud more than once a day in the shower. To no avail, 2 days ago I started bleeding uncontrollably and the red ridge started to swell - it looked like the stud was getting consumed by my face, so I took it out. Sure enough a keloid pushed itself right out of the hole - stood out of my face about 3 cm. It was so gross, I stuck a bandaid over it and went to bed.

Yesterday morning as soon as I got up I went to a different piercing shop and the guy confirmed that it was a keloid. He told me to leave the stud out and let it heal. Now, 36+ hours after removing the stud, the hole looks fine. It's obviously clear where the hole was, but the keloid is completely gone (at least on the outside).

What I'm wondering is if I since I made it the 6 weeks recommended before changing the jewelry anyway, is there any chance of me going back to a tattoo shop & having someone reinsert a new stud OR getting it repierced on the same spot?

Any and all advice is appreciated!

I tend to tell people not to change jewelry until the piercing is at least three months old, or has gone that long without having any flare-ups or reactions.

If you repierce at the exact same spot, you may or may not trigger more scar tissue growth from piercing on top of the healed spot. There's no way to tell if you nose will or won't like this type of maneuver until you actually do it and then of course, if you nose is unhappy, it's too late.

I tell folks to avoid soaps with chemical dyes, scents or overly harsh detergents, of which Dial Compete would have all three if I'm not mistaken. I suggest that people use a mild and natural soap, like Dr. Bronner's. If you want to do something antibacterial, try a soap with lavender oil in it instead of something synthetic.

Hot salt water compresses are great for noses too.

Thanks for the advice. I really really appreciate it.

As of today (3 days after removing the stud) it is clear that there will not be any remnants of the hole left. No matter what I'll have to get a new piercing. I don't think I want to take the chance of repiercing it through the same hole and the guy at the tattoo shop told me to do it on the other side. For now I ordered a magnetic fake nose ring which I'm going to use to cover up the scar before I go back to do the other side.

Thanks again! At least the 2nd time around I'll hopefully be somewhat wiser!

are you sure that you weren't allergic to the type of metal that was in your nose stud?
i have mine pierced and i always have problems with it... even after a year and ahalf of having it done.... the other problem might have been that the stud was too tight... or the people that pierced it didn't clean their gin properly... (it is supposed to be done with a gun)
if its important for you to have it on the same side as before, maybe give it another couple weeks to heal before getting it done again if not... just go get the other side done.... keep me posted

[color:"purple"]You know, at first i thought it was the metal ( I have a nickel allergy ) but they used a surgical steel stud. It was a screw, but now I am actually wondering if it was too tight. There were quite a few mornings I'd wake up & feel like the stud was imbedded just below the surface.

I'm going to go next week to have it redone (that will be 10 days after letting the first hole heal). There may be space just behind the original hole to have it done on the same side. That will be up to whoever does the piercing. Otherwise, it will be done on the other side. I will mention that I thought the first one was too tight and see if I can't get one made of titanium or something else. What is it? It starts w/an "N"

My original hole is almost completely gone. The Keloid is gone & now am just left w/a little red dot. Sadly, all my students today noticed that my stud was gone, too bad no one commented on how cool it was when i still had it!! LOL!

[color:"green"] Well..... good luck with the second time around. I had my nose pierced (with a nose screw) about two and a half weeks ago. So far everything has been fine (and hopefully will continue to be) but I keep reading so many stories where the piercing went wrong!

Honestly, I am willing to bet that there are very few piercings where things go wrong, just that we all hop on the internet to seek some assistance or advice so it sounds like there are more problems than there really are! Don't know. Maybe someone has some real stats on that!

Anyway, I loved my piercing and can't wait to have it done again.

More people on the Internet have trouble with body piercings than I've ever met in the entire 20 years that I've been a person with body piercings and known other pierced people.

i don't recall the "N" word you are looking for. sorry... i have had my nipple pierced for a couple years and it never seems to heal properly, and i just found out, myy boyfriend went and asked someone about it for me, but it may be done too far back... but at first i thought it was the metal... and titanium is a non alergenic metal... so it should be best to use... unless you can get gold... good luck tho

The metal you are both trying to think of is "niobium." It's an alloy and is non-allergic.
