I don't know if anyone caught it on NPR the other night, but there are scientists working on creating universes who say that it is mathematically possible. How cool is that? I need to go grab the segment from their website, but I find it really interesting especially with the conversations we've been having Read Permutation City by Greg Egan It was written in 1994 and covers this exact scenario - mathematicians successfully creating a universe and becoming "gods" by definition. It's utterly fascinating. (Egan's an atheist)

I guess what I would like to know is if you don't believe in creationism, and you don't believe in evolution, what other theory explaining "how we got here" is there? I've never heard of any other theory at all. Evolution just makes SENSE.
Although, Aredant, you're right... there IS the Flying Spaghetti Monster theory (hehe) Yes, this is what I am thinking as well. However, I do not think it is accurate to characterise this as belief - one does not belief in science in so much as one accepts it. To believe suggests adherence without evidence. Sorry, Yankeelass. I hope this doesn't qwell our intense passion for each other.

I'm curious, heavily of course, but I don't feel the need to know. I imagine (without expectation) that eventually I will go with evolution, but not now. Sorry, Yankeelass. Hey Jenna, This is not a post I visit often, since I am a diehard believer in diety (Latter Day Saint-Mormon & Wiccan). But I am very glad hear that not all atheists have been taken in by the evolution theory. I was one of those who thought atheist = evolutionist. Thank you for educating me Glad to hear that atheists can have open minds too.

Hi yall. Um, like, I'm a devout Roman catholic and also a Zorastrian and I like a little ritual blood sucking sometimes. I know the bible is true because it says so! Duh!
Uh - Yea, those of us who accept science are SOOOOOO closed minded -- HAWWW!

You would be surprised at how close minded the "scientific" people I know are. If you can't see it, measure it or otherwise quantify it it doesn't exist to them. So sorry if I offended anyone... just didn't realize that some atheists don't believe in evolution and appreciated the education. I don't appreciate people taking whacks at my choice of faith however, so please be nice

I have always wondered. If atheist don't believe in evolution, then what do they believe in? Seriously. Jenna_Atheist said "well I don't know". We don't know. But honey that is not atheism. That is agnosticism. Atheism is not about "not knowing", it is believing that there is no God but when you say you don't know, you are not counting yourself as an atheist but an agnostic. Yet if you are an agnostic, you don't deny God's existance either. So in order to be an atheist and don't believe in evolution, when the question of origin comes, an atheist has only two options I believe (unless atheist believe in Flying Spaghetti Monster theories) and that is we came either from nothing or the universe created itself. And wow that is so scientific that it makes me think that ya the atheists do have a right to question or even deny creationism.

And hey aredant, did you know that science was started by Creationist, not atheist because they believe that "a reasonable God created this universe in a reasonable way that through reason, we can learn more and more about our universe." and I believe that atheism has actually slowed down science. I mean if you believe in atheism, ask yourself what do you actually believe in. Basically an atheist would believe that we don't know where we came from but we know we are all going to die. And it doesn't even matter if we live anyway. If there is no God, then there is only one reality and that is everything is going to die, now or later. And then who cares about science, let's live and enjoy the time now because an eternity of non-existance is waiting us. But creationism teaches that God created everything and let's explore and learn more about this creation and by that, learn more about this amazing creator.
