My ds is now 4-weeks old and I'm still having some trouble with breast soreness. I know that
to properly latch on he needs to open his mouth wide and get as much of the areola in his
mouth as possible. He seems to have a tight little jaw and just doesn't open very wide. He's
not clamping right down on my nipple, but he just doesn't consistantly clamp down far
enough away from the nipple to prevent the soreness and cracking.

I need some tips on getting him to open wider! I'm getting frustrated and am about to quit
feeding at the breast and just pump milk and bottle feed it to him. HELP!

Have you tried different positions?
The football hold and the cross-over hold are recomended for babies that have trouble opening wide enough.

Also I thought this excerpt might be of help:
"Compress the breast at the margin of the areola with your thumb and index finger, so that your hand forms a u-shape. Compressed this way, your breast should closely match the shape of your baby's mouth, so that he can take in more of the breast. Your goal is to first stimulate the baby to "root" and then to bring him onto the breast. Touch the baby's lips to your nipple until he opens wide. When he opens his mouth really wide-and not before-quickly bring him onto the breast. Do not lean toward the baby; bring his shoulders and head to you. When you pull the baby in, keep the areola compressed until he begins sucking."

Sometimes it take two months for babies to develop a good nursing routine, don't give up!

I am large breasted and had to do this for the first couple of months. My doula called it the "Nipple Sandwich" and that's what I refer to it as now too..LOL

I had to do this because I am so large--it was hard for my little one to latch on correctly so holding my hand there helped a lot. I also had to do football hold.

Remember that you may have to hold him a certain way now and help him but as he gets stronger, he WILL be able to do it correctly without help.

Thanks for all the advice and support! I did speak to someone from our local LLL and after
talking to me for awhile over the phone, we figured out that the problem wasn't the latch-
on.....it's thrush! I got lots of antibiotics while I was in the hospital because of the c-section
and also because I was pretty sick with a cold during that time. I never would have put 2 and
2 together without that phone call! I just thought that it was normal soreness and I kept
waiting for it to go away and all the while dreading every feeding. I'm so excited that we
finally figured out the problem since my son just wasn't gaining weight. I guess it was
because I just wasn't feeding him enough times during the day because of the pain. We've
got meds now and I'm looking forward to resuming nursing pain-free!!!!

Michelle,

HEY!!! SOrry to hear you've got thrush but I'm SO HAPPY you figured it out!!! You definitely have to treat that so you won't keep passing it back and forth.

I don't know if she told you this or not, but you should also take a good probiotic. This link explains how to use probiotics to prevent/treat thrush:

The antibiotics kill the good bugs along with the bad ones, so you've got to get yourself in balance again by taking probiotics.

So glad to hear you're getting it taken care of and that he'll be able to continue to nurse. That's great news!
