Hi everyone, I'm brand new here and I was hoping to get a little help with starting the Almost a Newsboy Cap pattern from this site. To start it says to sc 8 in the 2nd ch from the hook. So when I try to do this it gets really crowded and bunched up. I'm using the hook size it says and everything; is it really possible to sc 8 in ONE ch?

Yes it is possible, you want to go ahead and get them all crowded in there, once you have them in there, pull on your yarn tail (not the end you are working from but the beginning tail) see how it pulls them in nice an tight ? That is what you want it to do. This will make it so that you don't have a hole in the top of your hat. Does that help ?
