Anyone have luck with selling handmade items? I have bins of crocheted baby items I've made and not used. Since my "baby" just turned seven and there's not another in the works, I'm thinking of ebaying many. I've heard though that the price you get for them is often not worth all the work involved. On the other hand I made these just for the enjoyment of making them (not with sale in mind) and right now they're only taking up space in my house instead of being used. Anyone have any luck (or tips) with this sort of sale?

I ebay origami every once in a while and I know other people who ebay other crafts. It's important to remember that people are on ebay to get bargains, not to pay "quality prices for quality items". So if you keep that in mind, and set reasonable expectations, you'll do file. Start with one, take lots of good photos, and see how it does <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Regarding baby items ...

You will have the best success in creating sets, or bundles of many items as opposed to selling one at a time.

That is the key to selling baby clothes, buyers love to see that they are getting several items, and listing them in bulk is a lot easier than one at a time ;-)

Lisa is right in the expectations, I know a friend who runs a successful seamstress business, he and his wife have tried selling dresses they have made but they are of such high quality ($900 - $1200) for a replica vintage ball gown and that's cheap for what they do. They couldn't get bids to even cover the cost of the materials let alone their labor.

Depending on what type of items you have made, there are some that have done very well on eBay.

Here are a few examples.

HAND CROCHETED BABY SHOES

Hand Crocheted Baby Afghans

HAND CROCHETED BABY BONNET

Crocheted Baby Afghan

Do a search on eBay for the type of items you have - I did a search for hand crocheted baby - to get the results I did. Look on the left column for the completed items check box, and then click the search button below that and you will be presented with the completed auctions for your search. You can then sort them with a pull down in the upper right. I like to see the highest first to get an idea of what has sold for the most ;-)

Hope that helps . . . Scott

You've inspired me, I'll put together a listing of 25 origami crane ornaments at a fixed price, since it's 10 cent fixed price listing today only. That'll get me a lot of free advertising for my origami shop even if nobody buys that particular group. I'll post the details once it's live! If anybody else ebays a crafty thing, post here so we can take a look.

OK I got sidetracked because someone just ordered a flower bouquet from me, so here is my fixed price, 10 cent auction for a bouquet of flowers. The price is the same as on my website so I can't possibly "lose money" - but for 10 cents I get a lot of free advertising!

i have sold a few handmade jewellery pieces but the problem is that people want quality one of a kind completely unique items but ... they are not willing to bid on anything more than a few dollars.
Baby wear may do better though
