I am looking to buy a new sewing machine geared for quilting. Right now I am using an old Singer. I would like some imput as to which is the best machine and the easiest to use. Thanks

Go to a machine dealer or look online for information about quilting with a machine.

Hi Chris,
I have been quilting for years and have 4 different machines to piece the tops with. I have found myself going back to the first machine I ever purchased and it only does straight stitching! The other are nice to do applique and the fancy stitches but to get the best straight stitch I have found the ones made with not plastic parts are the best.

I am certain my Great G-ma would agree with Marcia...unless you are very unhappy with the performance of your Singer (have you taken it in for a good cleaning and adjustmest lately?) then stick with the old standby...My Kenmore is at least 10 years old, but I was able to get a 1/4 in foot and also a walking foot (like I am ever going to machine quilt anything) ...but I have my Great Grand Ma's old Singer and several quilts and aprons that she made on it...It's a treadle and still works!

well i have a Janome MC4800 (like the QC now) and i love it. I still have my 25 yr old Singer too. i have yet to use all the stitches the Janome offers but do quilt on it. i bought the 1/4 foot, walking foot(quiltingfoot). it does great. you might look into that brand. i have had mine 3 yrs and paid then $1,000.00.

I will add my two-cents worth in praise of a machine that does no more than plain old straight stitching when it comes to machine piecing a quilt. I have also machine quilted several and found that my grandmother's 1938 Singer beats my brand-new Kenmore hands down for getting the job done. I also will reiterate about getting your old machine cleaned and oiled - and then sew something dark for awhile until you are sure that the oil won't get on any of your fabric. And remember, this forum is always here for you when you need help!
