Have you dabbled in writing horror? Do you like to read it? Do you read it, but don't think you can write it?

I think horror is a fun genre to play around with. It can also be really cathartic if you allow yourself to get to the bottom of some of your fears.

Here's this week's article.

I love horror, but think it is one of the hardest genres to write. If it's done wrong it comes out cheesy and there seems to be limited stories to write about. I have started one that I just need more time to finish...But if it's done right, the story will stay with me for a long time.

I agree, it's very easy to turn horror into cheese. But horror rip-offs can also be really funny... and then again it's also too easy to get them wrong and make them just plain dumb. Delicate balance.

Happy Halloween all!

For me, horror is a lot of fun, but sitting down to write it is a challenge in that your audience is jaded by things like slasher flicks and suspense. While I agree with Bastcat, that there are a limited number of scenarios, part of what I enjoy about writing is that you are forced to find a new spin on those concepts.

What has not been explored recently in fiction or even in film is the degredation of the human spirit as horror, which authors like Joseph Conrad seemed to understand and write so well. It goes a long way to displaying how there are many 'types' of horror, each with its own delicate flavors.

Horror is my favorite genre for everything but when I wrote it was not it.
