I have been looking into homeschooling my kids. My son is in 7th grade and my daughter is in first. I also have an 18 month old who is a little stinker. I have been agonizing over this since LAST year. I told my son he had the first 9 wks and if i didnt like what I see then there will be some changes. Well the first quarter is done and I cant stand what the system has become. So i'm here trying to get information on homeschooling positive, negative, and HOW DO YOU GET STARTED..lol

Thank you in advance for any info. It is truely appreciated.

PS.. I did talk to my son on this matter and he said he would like to be home schooled.

Have you found a homeschool group in your area?

I belong to a secular group locally that has families from all walks of life. I highly recommend finding a diverse secular group, you can talk with parents who have used all different types of curriculm, the unschoolers and everything in between.

What are you wanting to do?

If you are wanting to continue what the school is teaching you might try http://www.donnayoung.org/ for free printable worksheets.

If you want to get out and learn through hands on activities you might try googling your county and your city (and any major city in the area)to find out what activities are going on around the area. I recieve quarterly mailings with coupons and a list of what is in town for most of the cities in the area. There is so much to do and see and alot of times you have to really look for it. I didn't know half of the stuff thats in the area until I started to really look.

What is your son interested in? How About your daughter?

I have done a search but the ones I found are in the southern part of the state.

What are you wanting to do?
I would like to use both types of study for my kids. There is a great deal to learn by incortportating both.

What is your son interested in? How About your daughter?

They are both interested in all sorts of things. sports, music, cooking, crafts, etc. I have tried very hard not to stop them from learning new things that did not have the possiblity to harm them. So they have experienced quit a bit of diffent things.

We also have a neighbor that moved in a year or so ago that is homeschooling there daughter who I have chatted breifly with but about the subject. I will be seeing when would be a good time to get together to see if she knows of any support groups.

Aslo, If I go through with this will I need to write a letter of intent to be able to teach them at home? Our state does not have much as far as requirements just to keep a attendence log and they must attend class 180 days a year.

thanks again

Depends on your state, each one is different. I know several places online have form letters that you print off and send to the school.

Meg, the homeschooling editor, has a great e-book about starting homeschooling http://www.bellaonline.com/ebooks/ebook3 . When I decided to pull my teen out of school it was the first resource I used. She also reviewed some software I found helpful for tracking grade information if you go that route. I find it helps me stay on track - regardless of whether it's formal or alternative work.
