I just found an article on this topic this morning, right after posting the above.

As a past member of the military and a loooooonnnnnnggggg time Pagan I found something that made it easier for me at the time ... I just told people I was a hippie ... That way others were not really surprised or shocked at anything I did ... Like going to the beach at midnight on a full moon ...

On a government note ... Pagans can now have a pentacle by their name on the memorial in Nevada ... Now if we could just get it on the headstones in D.C. ...

In Nevada it wasn't the VA that said it was Ok to have the pentacle on the gravestone. It was the local government. Until the higher-ups say it's Ok, it will always be a struggle to get it on gravestones...
