I'm not 100% sure of the answer, but our Jewelry Making editor, Faith, is selling an ebook on copyright (for $5.49) which talks about exactly this kind of thing. She's marketing it to jewelry artisans, but the same rules apply to crochet.

It is a "method" and a "technique" so you may use it to design something. Since you do design, I second Chris's recommendation. You will be getting excellent information that you can certainly use.

Hi Chris, thanks for the link to the ebook. I'm going to take a look at it in a few minutes. Sounds like something that would really be helpful to me. I worry about copyright all the time.
