What movie comes to mind when you think of the African-American culture? We've only become commercially successful in Hollywood in the last few decades. In my curiousity, I created an African-American movie survey. Post what movies you picked and your reasoning behind your choices!

I can see "The Color Purple" won hands down as the top favorite African American movie of all time. I was really young when I saw it so my memory of the whole story was a bit hazy. But I can not forget the scenes of Oprah being beaten by her husband.

Scenes of domestic violence in a child's mind can be difficult to erase, I guess. What more for kids living in a family with an abusive father or mother? The trauma alone can greatly affect a child's psyche.

I'm a psychologist working as a counselor for a private school. Children no matter the race or family they belong can be very sensitive to such highly charged issues. This is probably the reason why I voted "The Color Purple" a sone of my favorites. The story of a woman overcoming spousal abuse and becoming a strong and independent female at a time when female subordination is the norm is simply amazing! I admire the strength of will of Oprah's character. I also happen to admire Oprah herself.
