I got a new cat a few weeks ago and he keeps trying to play with - including biting, my laptop cord. I've been working on training more appropriate behavior and I'm slowly making progress, but this is potentially really dangerous and I'm worried he'll get hurt. Can anyone recommend something to put on the cord to make it unattractive to him?
Thanks,
Julie

What about trying one of the bitter anti chew sprays that you get mainly aimed at dogs. A good one is bitter apple.
Alternatively we use Citronella oil wiped onto things we don't want chewed. This was as a result of our dogs a number of years ago chewing the inside of the car, electrics, steering wheel etc. They don't tend to like the smell so back off and really its not to bad a smell for us to have in the house!

I';d try spraying it with bitter apple or bitter ends, those worked well with our cars!

I went and got some of the bitter spray this morning. He smelled it going on and left the room. So far, he hasn't touched the cord. Thanks for the help!

Just wanted to update everyone. After one taste, my cat still tries to play with the cord but doesn't try to bite it.
Thanks again!

Don't use citronella oil. Cats can't metabolize essential oils, and EOs can be fatal to them.
It's worth it to note that cats intensely dislike citrus; perhaps rubbing the cord with lemon juice or a citrus peel would do the trick as well.

I had the same problem with my cat. Bitter Apple spray is a great idea. Also, if possible, stop what you're doing and play with your cat. That will wear him out. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
One last thing...if your cat is a born chord biter, be sure to unplug them all before leaving the house.
Congrats on getting a new kitty!
