I'm considering Oto's as well. Are you going to drip acclimate them? If they've been in the tank for awhile where you're buying them, you'll have a better chance of not loosing them after acclimation when you bring them home. They seem to be a bit sensitive to change. They seem to really need a planted tank too.
Nitrates still at 20 w/13 plants in my 10 gal for over 2 weeks now. I may need more plants to help absorb some of the nitrate.
I could have worse problems with my water than nitrate though so it's minor and workable with regular water changes like you said.
Ottos are good algae eaters! Every little thing you can do can help - sometimes you don't know what will really do the trick until you try it. (After researching all the relevent topics related to your particular tank set-up and fish and plants, etc., of course!)
