I got the Whisper 10 tonite but that answer created another question.

The aerobic bacteria. Do they need oxygen from the water from some kind of bubbler?

Attempting logic here (works with Sudoku, lol), the bio-sponge is in the filter box in front of the carbon-in-mesh-bag so I assume that that's where the bacteria will get its oxygen from, from the water that passed through the mesh bag first? But, if there's no bubbler making oxygen in the water...

The GS inherited the bubbler because I think they actually *need* it.

What do you think, does the aerobic bacteria need a bubbler in the water?

Save the media? The only media the old filter has is activated carbon in a mesh bag. Didn't come with a bio-sponge.

The Whisper10 filter I just got came with a pre-assembled cartridge. I can get cartidges and carbon and fill them myself but don't want to wait until tomorrow to get that type. This cartidge is tooo old and way overdue.

However, about the carbon in the old cartridge that you thought I could add to the new cartidge (if it wasn't pre-assembled)...

From what I've read, the carbon is sponge-like and once it's absorbed all it can, it's full and useless.

Are you suggesting that the carbon itself has bacteria on it and that's why I might add some to the new cartridge?

And to the tank? You mean literally drop some of the old carbon in the tank. Egads. I wouldn't feel comfortable with that at all.

I have a bunch of live plants, gravel and decorations so hopefully there is live bacteria on this stuff by now to help along a brand new cycling? (since I didn't have the sponge before)

Hope I don't see *too* thick.

You don't need a bubbler. The filter will provide the water surface agitation. As long as there is some water movement at the surface, the water will be oxygenated.
