I have some questions about Americans owning property in Ireland.

1. Is it allowed, or do you have to be a citizen of Ireland to be able to buy property there?

2. What do freehold, fee simple and fee tail mean in a listing of Irish property for sale?

Thanks!

Your sis in Christ,
Suz

A non-citizen can own property in Ireland.

I don't know the terms for the various entitlements, but there's a flying freehold, where the upper stories overhang another's property!

Thanks, Mary Ellen. Do you know if it works the same both in free Ireland and in Northern Ireland?

I can't imagine a flying freehold. OY! If I own something, I want to own all of it...what's under me AND what's over me.

This sort of thing really gets to me where we're living. People sell their land, but not with mineral rights, so I could be sitting on top of a gas or oil deposit. I could get the inconveniences of all their equipment, but not the financial profits from it, even though their drilling could cave in my house.

Now, I just have to pray for a zillion bucks to come my way somehow I found a beautiful property in Ireland for sale the other day. 13,000,000...not sure if it was Euros or dollars, but am assuming Euros as it was an Irish real estate site. I can't even remember the name of the area it was in...doesn't matter, it was in Ireland

Thanks again, and I hope things are going well for you and yours.
