When yo start to look at and question the very basis of your religious beliefs it has a dramatic effect on everything in your life.
It is very confronting to choose to look at a religion you've been spoon-fed most of your life with fresh, unbiased eyes and make an assessment as to whether you see any truth or value in what you have been told you have to do, say, believe, and think.
Personally speaking, I can say that getting to the other side of that process (and it took me on and off almost 10 years) is unimaginably liberating, and well worth getting through that horrible sense that the bottom of your world has just fallen out. It's when you realise that you're capable of thinking for yourself and understanding what the universe wants you to understand, that you also understand that you don't need the complex layers of other people's rules and beliefs to stand on anymore. You've built your own scaffolding and it supports you perfectly.
