What I like to do is ask the other person, "How do you picture your future life? What would it be like?" If necessary, say, "For example, what kind of job would you have? Would you like to have kids? Any other passions in life you see yourself exploring?" The answer to the kid question would have to be mentioned. And do this early on, as mentioned already.

I brought it up on the first date with my husband. I figure, why wait? If he wants kids that's a deal breaker, might as well not waste time. So when a screeching, free-range toddler went racing by our table I rolled my eyes and said, "I will NEVER be birthing one of those things!"

Turns out he was inordinately relived by that announcement

Tell people you'd rather spend 180.000 on yourself, than see it vapourise into possibly no investment at all.

This is the current calculated, estimated cost of bringing up ONE child, from birth to 21-year old, in the UK, at today's costings.

I told my bf on our first date, that if he really wanted to have kids some day, then it would be wise to not continue dating.

It's been awhile since I've dated, but I used to let the subject come up naturally. My tendency was to get to know a guy in a friendly manner before dating him. There have been a few that never progressed beyond friendship because they knew they wanted children.
