I'm fleshing out an idea for a book, and I keep wondering if it's worth writing! What if it's just a really bad idea? I wonder if other writers thought their ideas were bad or stupid or unpublishable.....and then they wrote Harry Potter or Mars & Venus?

I think you have to believe in your idea and feel it's worth pursuing or you might just get bored with it. There's a lot that goes into writing a book and you have to maintain your interest and passion in your idea or it becomes a chore.

I think most writers feel their idea is publishable or they wouldn't do it.

I've only written romance novels and a couple mysteries so couldn't say about anything else.

I agree with joanj. You must have a passion to write it that will last past chapter 3.

Next, go research the market thoroughly. 90% of all new books are non-fiction (which it seems you are intending to write?), so there is a fairly big market for all kinds of subjects.

I'm with the others here. I've started many a piece to find it fizzled. If there's any doubt about something, I put it behind me to exert efforts on something else that I feel in marketable.
