Scarlett here. I'm a horror author and I'm wondering what scares you?
I know what I like to read in a horror or paranormal novel, but as a writer, I'm interested to know what scares the reader.
For me, it's the unknown. Hithcock did it best. He'd leave hanging endings and that left the viewer to create their own .
It's that sense of "I don't know what's next" that gets me.
How about you?

True stories of the supernatural is what scares me. As an example books by Ed & Lorraine Warren, especially "In a Dark Place" and also "The Haunted", by Jack and Janet Smurl. Just knowing these are supposed to be true storis that just happened to regualr people is what I find scary. Forget that fiction stuff!

Scarlett,
My feet hanging off of the end of the bed when I'm trying to go to sleep, the jerking, stomach-swooping jolt you sometimes get when you're drifting off to sleep, the one that feels like you've floated off of the bed and suddenly fallen back down (I hope I'm not the only one that gets that!),the half-dream state when you're able to see your surroundings but you can't move or make a sound and it's hard to distinguish between reality and dreaming, everything just kind of melds together (I think it's called sleep paralysis?),meat hooks(don't ask me why, they're just creepy),and being trapped in a small enclosed space that's filling with water(car, submarine, cave).

Those are some of the things that scare me.....

What scares me? Lack of control mostly. That feeling when your in your vehicle and sliding across the road into oncoming traffic. The lights going out. My cat suddenly getting up to look at something that doesn't seem to be there. Vicious dogs. And spiders.

Zombies! I know it's silly but they terrify me.At the same time I'm strangely fascinated by anything that has them in it (although I can usually do WITHOUT the gore they put it movies with them. Not everyone wants to see all that blood and guts,we just want a good jolt)

Stuff like this in a Stephen King novel called Gerald's Game (Im ad-libbing, dont have the book here:) The scene where the heroine is lying tied up on the bed in a remote location where no one knows where she is, and after days of hearing a dog howling outside in the night, she finally hears the screen door slam open- it was loose to begin with- and then she hears the clicking of a dogs nails on the hall tiles, coming towards the bedroom! And to her! God! I had to close the book right there and didnt go back to it for awhile!!!! BeReal.

For me, it's the Pandora's box. You let the evil out and you can't get it back in. Clive Barker's Hellraiser is a great example.

I am a horror writer. My number 1 fear is bats. The kind that fly.
