There is a leather handbag on this site with silk thread embroidery work. It looks beautiful:

Could someone from this forum advise whether this type of craftwork is exceptional or common.
Thanks

Wow they are great!

You can embroider on anything that holds a stitch. The problem with embroidering on leather of the weight for a handbag is that it is very heavy and you would need specialist equipment to do so. You may find that they are painted or appliqued.

That said, softer leather, like that used in gloves, is fun to embroider on and, especially in Elizabethan times, was very common. There are some beautiful existant examples of leather gauntlets that were embroidered on the cuffs. I have some soft leather here at home that I intend to make into a pair of Elizabethan gauntlets sometime (complete with very intricate cuff embroidery).

That's the best thing about embroidery - it's all about experimentation and seeing what works and what doesn't.

I'm not sure which one of the handbags you had in mind. All the ones I clicked on were painted. But I just wanted to add to the above that there are special needles designed for working on leather. The points are triangular and go through leather much easier than regular needles tend to do. They also don't dull as quickly are regular needles do when they are used with leather.

The bag name is "Embroidered"

The promoter of the site(purselady) has posted about her webstore in Fashion forum.

Thanks, trendy for your comments on my website. It still needs considerable work and does not nearly cover all I do, but give me time.

I found the picture of the embroidered bag. It looks to me like the embroidery is done by the tambour method. A chain stitch would give the same appearance.

Francine,

Just in case your reply was directed to me, I am not the person with the website where the handbag is shown. That website is in the first message and you can probably purchase the bag from there.

Francine,

I checked their website. They ship worldwide. The shipping rate should be about CDN$16.
I saw your designs. They are beautiful.
