BellaOnline Forums Home and Garden Fish do bettas hiccup?

hey guys! so i noticed that sometimes my purpie's gills will freek out...like hiccups. they'll open and close rapidly and bubbles will come out...this will happen until he oes to the top to breath. i haven't thought to much of it but should i be worried?

You've got me stumped. I would just keep and eye on it, if it goes away good- because that isn't "normal" behavior.

hmmm...odd. i've seen this, but only as an occasional thing. Is it constant? or just every now and then? I've always thought of it more as a burp. Like they have excess air and need to get rid of it, then go back up to breathe...

But honestly, Im not sure of the cause either.

its maybe once or twice a week. i always yell at him breath purpie breath!!!(lol i talk to my fish, he listens very well) it dosent seem to cause any problems but if it gets worse then ill start to really worry

If it becomes more regular i would be concerned. but not now, imo.
