I have wanted to get a tatoo for years but so far I haven't because I could never decide on what exactly I wanted and am so phobic of needles I'm not sure that I will have the nerve to have more than one done if I decided later I want something different. This last March I lost my mother after her 12 year battle with scleroderma. One of her favorite things were pink roses. I would like to have one put in my upper back in memory of her, but I would like to also put something else there to go along with it. Some people have suggested maybe some type of symbols on either side (i.e. a symbol for love or strength) I like that idea but I was wondering if anyone else could give me any other suggestions? Thanks!

Firstly, many condolences for your mother and I'm sorry to hear of your loss. My best suggestion to you is to take a look at as many tattoo designs as you can possibly get a hold of. And I mean actual photographs, flash designs, artist portfolios etc.

I always find it a bit odd that people would look for suggestions from others who don't particularly know a lick about them or what their life experiences, morals, values, beliefs may be. We would love to help you, but it's a bit ridiculous with this broad a question.

You know what's best, so don't be lazy.

Check out all the wonderful art there is out there on your own. Develop your own opinions of what designs you like most, and what you know you certainly would not get. In the end you may even find that you're crowding it with too much and want the rose/s only.

Enjoy.

Well I apologize if my question seemed ridiculous. I have spent a lot of time trying to find a design for the last 6 months since I lost her and have some ideas, but maybe I've been looking too hard because I feel somewhat overwhelmed by all that is out there. I came across this forum and was impressed by what I read and saw and thought maybe someone may have come across a memorial design or photo they were particularly impressed by that may help me in making a decision.

I always tell people to look at what emotions they are trying to connect to the tattoo, what sort of way you remember the person.

Was there something your mother really liked that you shared with her and could incorporate into a tattoo?

Instead of asking for suggestions online, you should sit down and think for yourself. A tattoo is a personal matter, and should not be someone else's idea. It should be your own. If you're not sure what you want, then hold off getting your tattoo until you know for sure.

Remember, tattoo removal is not cheap.

I have now waited 30 years for my first tattoo and it is done. I never really knew what I wanted which is why it has taken so long. At least you have an idea of where you wish to start. I would reccomend you go and see a tattooist who has worked on a friend whose ink youlike. It is likely that you will end up needing a completely custom job as I did and any artist worth working with will be more than willing to help you. Make sure you know what elements you want to incorporate and I am sure you will be advised of what symbols will complememnt your pink rose. Don't be too ambitious as the more detail you require the larger the tattoo will need to be. I would recommend steering clear of the upper back shoulder as it hurts more for a first one. My first is on the meaty part of my shoulder and didn't hurt due to location and the skill of my inker. Whatever you do enjoy the experience and hopefully you won't become addicted!!!
