Most parents look for faults of children and the positives. avoid criticism and raise the level of praise.

Make them do things themselves. So many parents want to do things for their kids to "do it right" or "get it done faster" that they don't see the value in allowing their children to do things for themselves... washing their clothes, helping with dinner, doing dishes. They won't do it well at first but after a while they will and they'll feel better about themselves for being independent and confident that they can do it--which helps in the long run, when they are adults.

Quite true.

I agree with the "catch them doing good" plan. Too many parents and teachers are focused on criticizing children. While this may not be what they're trying to do, it is all too often the reality.

I've seen how being positive can motivate children and enhance their self-esteem in my fifth grade classroom and at home with my own children. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

The saying "Children learn what they live" is so true--so it's up to us adults to set good examples, too.

Children do learn what they live. If you have a parent smoking and telling a child not to smoke it is hypocritical and the child will learn not to listen to anything the parent says. Many parents have a do as I say not as I do policy. Double standards, and kids are smart enough to see through that right off the bat.
