I have a baby shawl pattern that calls for Pand Magnun 5-ply yarn and a 4.5 crochet hook. Gauge is 10 (1 tr, 1 ch) sps and 12 rows to 10 cm.

What's a good substitute. Is this what we in the US call baby yarn.

I had a look at their site--some very nice yarns--and it does appear to be baby yarn or possibly sport. If you have some baby yarn, work up a swatch to check your gauge; that would be your best determinant. Sometimes, I change up the yarn called for because I tend to work tight stitches on smaller pieces.

No this is not baby wool, it is closer to your sport weight yarn or the English double knit. In Australia we have baby which is also known as 3ply, 5ply and 8ply which is closest to your worsted weight.
