I posted this in the hair section of the forum. Unfortunately, people there seemed to be more concerned with minor hair problems. I am hoping some of you can help me. This is effecting every aspect of my life. Just today, I lost about 20 hairs just running my fingers through my hair. I have cut way down on protein (in comparison to what I was eating) and have added in apples and kiwis. Still, I am losing a ton of hair. I am also taking a hair loss vitamin and other vitamins. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I am new to this forum. I would like to thank those involved. This website seems to have a wealth of valuable information.

As is obvious from the title of my post, I am experiencing hair loss. The loss of hair seemed to coincide with my low carb dieting. I eventually lost 100 lbs. and much of my hair. I have since maintained my weight loss by following a low carb diet. I was consumed with college (I just graduated with my Bachelor's degree) and did not realize just how much protein I was consuming. For example, a half of a can of tuna contains in excess of 20 grams of protein.

A lady at the health food store said that my hair loss is likely due to too much protein in my diet. I have since tried to include more grains and fruits (I already eat lots of vegetables). However, my hair is still falling out. I am terrified of washing my hair or combing it because I know hairs will fall out. This has impacted my social life. I do not want to meet people or go anywhere. I am constantly embarrassed because of my thin hair. The loss is most noticeable in the front. It is not at the hairline, but slightly back. I have a gap in my hair on each side that is incredibly disturbing. The psychological impact of my hair loss has been enormous. The simple pleasure of brushing my hair has been lost. Swimming is also not as much fun. (By the way, I am 26. I do have hypothyrodism that it under control. I recently switched from synthroid/levoxyl to Armour thyroid -as I have read that synthroid and generics can cause hair loss).
How long do people think it should take before my new medication and new ways of eating help my hair to improve? Will it ever improve?

The key to losing weight (according to everything I read for my blood type, conditions, etc.) is a low carb diet. I know that I cannot eat regular whole grains or ample amounts of fruit. This had become difficult. I started introducing fruits like apples back into my diet and now I want to eat them all of the time. Anyway, any advice would be helpful. I truly hope that there is hope and good news awaiting me about my hair situation. I am too young and have come too far to have my hair (or lack thereof) ruin everything.

Thank you in advance for your help.

I have an entire page on this here -

ANY diet causes hair loss because it's a normal part of the weight loss cycle. So it's not just low carb. In fact low carb gives you the healthiest hair of pretty much any diet.

So stick with it! Make sure you're taking your vitamins and that you are as low stress as possible. But beyond that, once your weight loss stabilizes, your body will go back into a hair growing mode.
