Here's what I would do:1) Keep the good blocks, fix the ones you can, and toss the ones you can't.
2) Measure all of the blocks. Find the biggest one. Pick a fabric (plain or patterned) or two that would match with the rest of the colours in the blocks. Sew a small border around all four sides of the biggest block to make it to the next inch size up (for example, if the block measures 9", sew a border to make it 10.5" square). And yes, you can cut hexagon shapes to make squares, by trimming the sides that need it, and adding in the borders all around. I've done it (and if
I can do it, anyone can!).
3) Sew on a fabric border to all the blocks to make them
all the same size.
If you want to keep the blocks as hexagons, just add the borders around all the sides, using the same method as above. Since you mentioned they were added like a log cabin, you probably know how to do so already. Anyway, once they are all the same size you'll be in heaven Although I don't envy you the joining of those hexagons!
Congrats on the acquisition of your partially-finished top, and bless you for tackling the completion Would love to see a picture when it's done!
