Candy, I think you always have to sell -- whether it's your ideas, your skills, your own products. You are selling when you want Mexican and your husband wants burgers and you try to persuade him.

However, there are a ton of ways to earn money from home -- from telecommuting to having an in-home day care to pet-sitting to sewing to on and on, that are not typical "sales" jobs where you sell products.

Check out this link to the Bellaonline SOHO site for Business Ideas. Many of the businessess profiled are great for one-person start-up ventures.

Essentially, if you want to make a living doing your own thing or being at home with your children, it is more and more possible and millions of women are doing it right now.

Good Luck!

Candice,
I think it's important to know why you don't want to buy or sell anything. Is it because of the financial aspect of buying, or is it because you're shy and it's difficult for you to approach other people? (Both valid concerns.)

Deborah's comments are so true. With ANY business you have to sell something...maybe yourself and your expertise but you still have to show someone that you can help them or do the job.

If it's financial, there are many businesses out there that are low cost to start but you still have to get customers or clients somehow.

One thing I've learned over the past 20 years in business is that our old idea of "selling" or pressuring someone to buy something from us is really old-school. Today the key is to listen to others first. Most people are dissatisfied either with their job, the amount of money they have, the amount of time they have or their health.

If you can help solve their problem or fill a need they have, then that terrible feeling of selling isn't really there. You shift into "helping."

Know your strengths and what you offer. Find a way to help in one of those areas and you're off to a good start.
