Hi! Any one have any suggestions on a project for a complete beginner? I'm stuck at home for the next 3-4 weeks because of surgery. I vaguely recall making a granny square in art in 3rd grade or something, but haven't tried anything since. I need something that is easy to do, will take up some time, and will help relieve the daytime boredom.

Any simple lap robe or afghan can be made very beautifully with a half-double crochet stitch, especially if you use a variegated yarn. Good luck with your surgery!

I've not gotten into granny squares yet, because to me they are very difficult, and I crochet for the fun of it, not to get so frustrated I want to throw all my supplies plus my yarn stash in the trash!

Thanks! My sister just dumped off a bag full of the prettiest, softest yarn. I hope its easy to work with. It's Caron brand. I don't know if that's any good or not. But its sort of purply/mauve. I'm going to try an afghan. How badly can I screw up a plain double crochet?

I always suggest scarfs as a newbie project. very simple, one stitch, and you quit when it's big enough.
btw - that sounds like caron simply soft. its very nice yarn to work with indeed! However, I find that pills badly when washed, but i've heard many others say they dont have that problem. use it, its a nice yarn.

Well Wildfern !
God Bless you as you heal and " Create " it's a God thing .

You could make a dc stitch oblong piece and whip stitch the seams ,and make a Hobo Bag.
Or at best if you want a pattern for one , check the web for several simple patterns.
I don't have any on file.

You could make some slippers > again make oblong pieces and gather both ends together and sew the opened part 3/4 way closed and , you have a very very plain but nice foot warmer.
Now you gotta measure those piggies and give a little room for the gathered ends.

BUT. here is a cute Sandles pattern site >
http://www.interweavecrochet.com/projects/2006/sandals.pdf

Make some Book marks with a Tassel.

All these can be make using the dc and hdc .

Watch out cause your gonna want to do other stitches once you mastered the Basics.

And , I DO NOT do Afghans , ( just squares ) because Afghans are boring , very beautiful , but too long to work on one thing.
I am a slow sewer ( and busy with family and home stuff ), so I like quick small things like SQUARES .

Hi! In my time, I crochet baby basinet blankets for the hospitals. Very simple chain, single crochet or half double crochet stitch. Very easy and you could do 1 or more a day, depending on your time. Size 12" by approx. 18".
Good Luck!!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery and a warm welcome to the world of crocheting!

You've already received a lot of great ideas for some beginner projects, and had a good idea of your own. Here are my thoughts on the subject.

Granny squares do work well as a beginner project. You could use the traditional granny motif, or if boredom sets in, learn to make some of the granny square variations. Depending on how many you complete, after they're sewn together you might have a scarf, a baby blanket, or a full size afghan.

Another option is to make squares that are all the same size, but using different stiches for each one. One square might be sc, the next one dc, etc. When you're done, sew them together and not only will you have a great sampler afghan, but you'll have learned and practiced lots of different stitches.

My last suggestion is to use 100% cotton yarn to make dishcloths. This is similar to the sampler afghan projcet, but instead of one project when you're done, you'll have lots of usable dishcloths that last much longer than purchased ones. They also make nice hostess gifts or stocking stuffers.

Please let us know what project you decide on and be sure to post a message if you need any help with a particular stitch or technique.

Yeah! I've got my cast! Well, sort of. I have a fiber glass cast, but it's cut on each side to allow for expansion due to swelling. Feels better than the soft splint though!

I now have two more colors. This really pretty jade green and a creamy off-white. I'm going to do 8 x 8 blocks (or something like that) and then sew them all together.

I think I'm doing a half-double crochet. I pull up the two loops and then pull through all of the loops at once. Is that HDC? Whatever, it looks neat.

Hi there crochet addicts! I need to make a bag for my yarn. I have been purchasing yard left and right and have bags all over my closet. Not cool I know. I need to clean house ;-) Since I am a beginner I was looking for a simple tote or bag to make. I obviously don't know how to design but was wondering if anyone knows of a free pattern for a nice large yarn bag with a pocket of some sort. I can do sc,half double and dc so far. Thank you for your suggestions. Happy weekend one and all, I am excited as I am going to the longest yard sale- hope to find some good crochet books, magazines and yarn !! Wish me Luck
