Here's an article from USA Today that I felt would be relevant to the childfree. I have to say I agree with the article, but it sure is hard to see progress in the american midwest, where things are still very child-centric.

USA Today - Society switches focus away from children

Hmmm.. interesting. I, too, have a hard time relating, though. Here in the south (and close to the midwest), it certainly doesn't feel like society is switching it's focus towards adults at all. I wish (o=. I kind of doubt it's going to switch here in the Bible belt anytime soon, though.

I like that article....good times ahead.

I heard that among US cities (or at least those involved in the study), Seattle is second only to San Francisco in terms of the lowest number of children per household. I've also heard that Washington state has the lowest church attendance per capita of all the US states. Interesting parallel - also supports what you said, aerolithe, about the Bible Belt not switching it's focus anytime soon.

Mother always said that even when things seem bad there's someone else who's having a worse day. Like being stung by a bee or getting a splinter or being chained to the wall in someone's sex dungeon.

Times are changing....Soon there will be more couples without children then with.

What does this mean for politics? The pollies will have to offer the childfree something to get their vote then wont they?

[color:"blue"] Yep. I live in the bible belt, and I don't think the shift will be soon enough. <img src="/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" />

If motherhood doesn't interest you, don't do it. It didn't interest me, so I didn't do it. Anyway, I would have made a terrible parent. The first time my child didn't do what I wanted, I'd kill him."

I'm sorry to see the shift. I don't have and don't want kids. But I know the future of our world depends on how today's kids (and future kids) end up as grown ups. I think the focus of society needs to stay on children (not on the push to have them, but on the raising/support of).

I don't think we are quite there yet in the south (NC), but I am glad to see that it is certainly starting to be more acceptable in some places to remain childfree.

[color:"blue"] I would just love the bingoeing to stop. Also the stupid assumptions that everyone has kids. (how may kids to you have? when do you want children? don't you want children?) those are all annoying questions.

I agree with you but look at the way todays kids are being raised in general??? There is no hope and I feel that the next generation will be 100 times worse.

God help me! I will be paying some of these people to wipe my #### when I am older! Society is breaking down at breakneck speed. I am just so glad I am not raising a child in todays world.Even if you had the best intentions of raising a well adjusted adult with all the other kids out there who are "dragged up" (not raised right) you would have no hope as your kid would be influenced by the dregs of society and if you look around these days the dregs seem to be the majority now....
