I have no idea for sure, but I would assume a roosting box is probably just a platform without sides. Not much help on that question, I'm afraid.

From what I understand, a roosting box is something used for small wild birds to take shelter in when they are in colder climates. The main difference is that the entrance hole is at the bottom front (instead of the top front like a nesting box) and it has perches inside so several birds can huddle together for warmth. The roof should also be sloped so snow doesn't accumulate and it should have a few little drainage holes in the bottom for moisture to escape.

They wouldn't normally build a nest in this box because of where the hole is (and you don't usually put perches on the inside of a nest box).

I'm a bit better with the odd trivia so you'll have to help out with the basics! LOL

I was thinking about this roosting box and I suspect it might also be used in the tropics where they have torrential downpours and loss of habitat. (Normally the birds would shelter in dense tree canopies - at least I would think - but if it that's not available a roosting box would come in handy to keep them from being knocked about, soaked, & drowned.)

Not being able to see it (or visualize well) I don't really know. Maybe the next time you go you could ask? I'd be interested in knowing what they are for.

I know sometimes there are differences simply due to cultures and climates. This might be something more specific to your area because if I'm not mistaken many pet birds are kept out of doors in cages rather than inside. It could have something to do with that or it could be something to simulate what they do naturally in the wild for shelter. It's really hard to say. If you find out please let me know - I'm always interested in learning new things!
