My little red guy died on the 4th. He had been behaving odd since a water change about 2 weeks before. He had no physical symptoms (no sores, spots, lesions, etc.) He simply sat on the bottom of the tank. Sometimes he ate, sometimes he didnt. He would still come to the front of the tank to see me sometimes. Toward the end, he laid on his side. I thought it seemed like a bacterical infection, so I fed him medicated food for about 8 days. He seemed to be getting a little better a few days after the medicated food ended, but then got worse again. I had just gone to the petstore (petsmart) to get tetracyclin or kanamycin. They didnt have any. Since it was the fourth, the smaller mom and pop was closed. Unfortunately I didnt think about Walmart, but I dont recall seeing either of those there and by tht point it probably wouldnt have helped anyway. My question is: Does it sound like a bacterial infection or something else? Thanks guys,
Amber

Weird as it may sound, do you know for sure whether he didn't just die of old age.....?

Yes, he was about 5 or 6 months old when i got him, which was in january. so he was only around a year old. thanks for the thought though.

when Crimson died he did pretty much the same thing right up to laying on his side pretty much all the time. Would still respond if he saw me come up to the tank. Wouldnt always eat though. Crimson died of a tumor. Do you know if one side seemed to bulge out more than the other?

Your beta sounds some what similar to mine, though mine had additional symptoms.

My beta's symptoms were: not as active, staying near the bottom except for air, didn't eat or ate little when fed, general loss of color vibrance, and appeared to have difficulty breathing or was not taking as deep of breaths.

My beta did pass away about 2 weeks ago.

I had started to ask around for what could be causing him to act this way, since I had exhausted every effort myself and other beta pet keepers I knew could suggest. I was told he might have an internal paracite, and that there is no known way to treat that type of paracite.

I'm sorry about your fish. Hope things start looking up as we head into fall.

Sorry for your loss
