I have a pair of lovebirds that has one baby. I am wondering when he can be on his own? He is almost 6 weeks old. Is there a way for me to tell if he is getting the hang of eating the food. I take him out each day and hold him and talk to him and then he goes back in with his parents. thanks for any help you can give me.

Just watch him & see if he is eating and especially drinking water on his own. They usually start eating quite well a few days before they start drinking, so once you see him drinking on his own for a few days, he should be fine to remove. Lovebirds are normally fully weaned between 6-8 weeks of age.

Thank you, I will keep watching. So far they seem to be still feeding him. The male will pick at his feet and chase him, I don't know if he is trying to get him to go eat or what sometimes it looks like he will hurt him. I don't want him to get hurt. They have already started breeding again. So I haven't been sure of what to do. Thanks for the advice.

If the parents have already started breeding again, the male may be trying to chase him away. He just might hurt him. Have you seen him drink water at all?

No I haven't seen him go near the dishes at all. I don't see him all the time. When he is out of the nest he sits on one of the ladders. I assume that he is still being fed by the parents because he is getting bigger. I hold him some each day and he doesn't seem to be weaker or anything like that. I just don't want him to get hurt. I appreciate all the help and advice.
