I'm also trying to make a purse but I do not understand the pattern, here how it goes.
Step 1: Knit a rectangle!
PATTERN: CO 58st. Row 1 (WS): Purl. Row 2 (RS setup): K3, P4, K8, P4, K2, P4, K8, P4, K2, P4, K8, P4, K3. CONT. IN PATTERN FOR 3 MORE ROWS. ROW 5: K3, P4, C8B, P4, K2, P4, C8B, P4, K2, P4, C8B, P4, K3. CONT. IN PATTERN, REPEATING CABLES EVERY 10 ROWS. PERSONS SAYS: THEY WORKED 9 CABLES, THEN WORKED 4 ROWS IN PATTERN, 1 PURL ROW (ON WS), AND BOUND OFF.

I'M NEW AT THIS THAT IS WHY I'M SO CONFUSED.

PLEASE HELP. THANKS.
EVEVAL

You'll need a cable needle for this pattern, it's a short needle about 4 inches long which you should be able to get from your knitting store. When it says "C8B" put the first 4 stitches onto your cable needle and hold it at the back of the work, knit the next four stitches as normal, then knit the 4 stitches from the cable needle. The stitches will be grouped together rather tightly on the next row, that is normal, but as you work the next few rows they will slacken up again till you're ready for the next cable row.

Have fun making your purse!
