I have an 18 month old daughter and want to start her on the path to potty training. She absolutely hates being wet/soiled so now is probably a good time. But, little girls are different from little boys (at least mine is--I had to drag my son through potty training). So, tips would be greatly apprecited.

Hi Lynn, As I only have boys, I am probably wasting your time, however a baby that hates to be wet will probably train quite easily. My boys were all different. A friend of mine has all girls and each personality was a different training regimen also. One girl would hold it, poo, then take it to a hiding spot. The way I remember it, pee was easy, #2 was avoided by most. #1, they say to have a potty tea party with dolls, and a large pitcher of juice and salty crackers. My unorthodox method involved no pants for a couple of weeks in the summer, so I could really see what was up. We just got so used to this, we wound up with lots of pictures that aren't great for the album!!

My oldest daughter was potty trained at 19 months by my mom because I was in my 8th month of pregnancy with my second daughter. The oldest was very, very easy because she didn't like to be wet either. My mom had her trained in about 2 days and 1 accident on the 3rd day and that was it.
#2, on the other hand, I trained at 3 years old. Before that, forget it - she screamed bloody murder if I even mentioned the potty, so I waited until she was ready.
What I saw my mom do with the oldest was take her about every 1/2 hour to 1 hour and would let her sit and look at books or read to her while she was on the potty. Honestly, that was about it.
I tried that with #2, HA! Didn't work. One thing I do remember doing is letting her wear "big girl panties," not pull-ups because she knew it was okay to have an "accident" in the pull-ups. I also took her to the potty about every 1/2 hour and at first, she sat there for a good 20 to 30 minutes, not doing anything, get down and run off and pee somewhere! But she eventually caught on - I think it took her about 2 full weeks to really get what was going on, and #2 took a little longer because she would tell me "I need a diaper" when she had to go #2 at first. I don't know if she was scared or what, but she eventually caught on to that, too.
I guess the best advice I can give, and you already know this, be patient - she'll get it.

Oh yeah, I remember "big boy" undies. The boys were so proud, and soaked them like crazy. That's why we wound up without any. My boys were outside and too busy to bother with such dull details as potty training. One son would grunt and strain and hold in, but refuse to admit that he may have to go. Ten years later I still see him "oddly" walk to the washroom after they have been outdoors and busy.

Well, we took the kiddy potty out today and let her play with it. She wasn't scared of it, at least. She was also willing to sit on it--sans bottoms--and look at books anytime one of us went into the bathrom (not that she did anything). I think that's a pretty good step. I think I'll let her get used to this for a week and then get serious this coming weekend.
So much better than nmy son who screamed for months every time we took it out of the cabinet. Even now at 7 he has to have all the lights on in the bathroom/hall to go. NOthing like "potty monsters."

My son was sooo easy to train because he could see what he was doing. We made bubbles with dish soap and target practice with fruit loops LOL!!! My daughter on the other hand was a handful! She would go for a month telling us she had to go, we took her, she went, we did the celebration dance....then she stopped....she was like a cat with a special corner she would go hide in. We did a sticker chart. After she collected X amount of stickers, something special was done. I really hated the bribing method but my living room started smelling like a litter box. One day right after her 3rd birthday in January of this year, she just started going on her own. She would fly through the house announcing her intentions and she just went. There is nothing cuter then a 3 year old with shorts around the ankles, moving as fast as she can to the bathroom announcing " I gotta potty, I gotta potty" LOL

my advice is do it the old fashion way. take them to the potty every two hours and put cloth diaper on them. they are uncomfortable when wet or drity so they learn to avoud uncomfortable by going to the potty. my mom took me with her to the bathroom and i had a little potty i could set on. and she called me a big girl and i got big girl cloths (which meant i could pick out cloths form moms old cloches to play in and real pretty pantis!!! but that was before they had cartoon dieperse but you could switch to plan white cloth diperse and tell her when she goes potty that she gets new panties and add more panties as you go!!!... just a thought
All things are permissible but not all things are beneficial. judge not lest ye be judged.

Hey bribery (I mean motivational tools) is/are a moms friend. I love the fruit loops and dress up clothes tricks. You guys have good imaginations. Lynn, we still have to have the up/down stairs hall lights on. I dont remember what it was like to sleep in a dark room. Oh well this is safer for them when roaming around in the night. I have video of my middle son tapping out a rhythm with his bare feet while sitting on the (dry) potty. Let us know how it goes.

Yes, I'm still yapping! The hard one for two of my boys was making it through the night. After several attempts to get one boy to wake enough to "go," only to get up an hour later to change his sheets, he remained in "goodnights" till he was 6. He was motivated to stop when a brother threatened to use this info at school. Not cool but I guess it worked.

I don't understand parents imposing their schedules on children. Every child is unique. A baby who isn't even two years old is extremely young. If you push, you may be inflicting long-lasting damage. Each child potty trains at his own time. Also, one problem is those terrible throw-away diapers. Not only are they awful for the environment, but they inhibit a natural desire to grow up. If you use the throw-away diapers, you might want to switch to real cotton diapers.
