Karen Scholl of Karen Scholl Horsemanship for Women will be competing in the Extreme Cowboy Race June 9-11, 2006 at the Western States Horse Expo in Sacramento, California. Airing date on RFD-TV of this race has not been established.

A horse behaviorist and clinician teaching psychology based horsemanship for over 10 years; Karen brings her message to women (and men) in a format that is non-threatening, humorous and relative. With a corporate background with Intel and as the former president of Parelli Natural Horsemanship, she helps women focus on leadership, confidence and trust in the horse-human relationship. Karen observes, Many women struggle in their attempt to demonstrate the type of leadership they know the horse needs, simply because weve been programmed since little girls to be nice or others wont like you!

Karen explains, After all three levels of the Savvy System were established, I felt my main corporate objectives were met. I kept longing to get back to helping people realize their dream with horses and sharing whats been shared with me.

In 2001, Karen made the decision to teach independently, developing her perspective on Horsemanship for Women.

Going through the learning process myself, from literally knowing nothing about horses to teaching psychology-based training at clinics and seminars, I have pushed through the mental and physical challenges that many women face. Karen further explains, Most clinicians are men who have vast amounts of experience riding difficult or young horses. I find that women appreciate learning from someone that can totally relate to how they feel because theyve been in that situation themselves.

Women have a unique challenge when learning new skills that can put them at risk physically, while men tend to use a learn-while-doing approach, wondering why all the women are still standing around talking about it! Karen observes, After more than ten years of teaching, my theory is that men can rely on their physical strength should a situation become difficult, while women are more vulnerable and need more information prior to trying something that may put them at risk.

The "Extreme Cowboy Race" is a timed race with obstacles designed to not only push horse and rider out of their traditional comfort zone, but also test the communication and horsemanship of each team. Judges award points based on a set of five criteria: 1. Horsemanship, 2. Cadence, 3. Control, 4. Horse's attitude, and 5. Overall execution. The first round of competition features 14 horse-and-rider teams. The top eight competitors move on to Round 2 for another set of competition. The top four competitors then advance to Round 3 for an all-out race to the finish and the title of "Extreme Cowboy."

All of the criteria used in the Extreme Cowboy Race will exemplify Karens horsemanship skills, and demonstrate that leadership, confidence and trust are the keys to a dynamic relationship with ones horse.

If I win the race is not of importance, states Karen, but rather that my horse and I have fun and communicate effectively. Actually, if my horse and I do our jobs correctly, there is no reason why we wouldnt win! More significantly, I want to demonstrate that anyone can, and needs be, a leader with their horse.they just need to learn the skills that are essential to establish the leadership to develop the confidence that leads to trust.

The Western States Horse Expo is in its 8th year and is held at the Cal Expo Fairgrounds in Sacramento, California.
