The Exorcist 1973 because it is Biblical.

I agree The Exorcist is scary stuff, but I wouldn't call it biblical. Besides, the religious side of The Exorcist is far more positive than scary, for example Father Karras' battle to regain his faith is ultimately successful, plus Chris MacNeil eventually puts her faith in the Church and therefore, God, to save her daughter.

For those who find the movie extreme and frightening, the 'biblical' side should be the part that puts their mind at rest.

Scariest horror? Try more visceral stuff like Texas Chainsaw Massacre for outright terror - as this is far more likely to happen to you than being possessed...plus ethereal/surreal fare like The Grudge, The Ring and Requiem for a Dream.

I am really confused by this choice familychoice. I have seen the Rocky Horror on film and on stage, and have never even slightly considered it scary. Funny, silly and at times, great fun yes, but I can't think of anything that I considered frightening...

Unless you are being sarcastic and selecting it due to either a: you are scared by Tim Curry (or any man) in fishnets and a basque or b: Anything containing so much audience participation must be terrifying! In which case, sorry for not being sharper!

I would be very interested to know...

perhaps scared would be too big a word...unnerved...perhaps. I'm certainly not aroused by such a sight and anyone who says I am is a ruddy liar.

Actually, the exorcist is the scariest movie I've ever seen. I watched it when I was about ten and have been scarred for life. Not because of any religious connotations but because of Linda Blair when she had her "transformation" and sits up on the bed. At 37 I will still have a flash back dream to when her head spins around and she's flipping around the bed. Whenever talk comes up on the tube I'm flying out of the room or changing the channel so I don't have to hear that voice. I hate that movie.

Scary movie number 2 that's scarred me forever? The Candyman.

And scary movie number 3. The Pet Semetary, specifically when the baby is hiding under the bed with an exacto knife and cuts Jimmy Smits achilles tendon. I haven't been able to get into bed without that coming into mind since.

And finally, scary movie number four. Poltergeist. I hate clowns because of this movie. Otherwise it's one of my favourite movies.

Pretty much all of these I watched as a child (non-existent parent, thank you PayTV). I definitely have more enjoyment of horror movies today but am selective of what I watch because I'm so damn impressionable.

Andy, I hate your avatar. It freaks me out. I have to avert my eyes or scroll past it. Very The Ring-ish. Scary movie night on the space channel has similar scary stuff like that that I have change past.

Ok. I'm about down. <img src="/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Moe, choice number 4 was the first movie to scare me so bad, I couldn't sleep. I also don't 'do' clowns!

Having watched it many times since that fateful day some 20 years ago (!), I have found it less scary and enjoyed it more. Great film.

freesiagirl, just be glad it is not the esteemed editor in the pic!
