My son fed our one year old Papillon dog with table food once now she decided that she is not eating her dog food again. She has not eaten in 5 days. I don't know who is going to give up first, her or I. I know that people food is not good for her but she don't care. She just sits there and stares at her bowl of dog food. Any suggestions would appreciated.
Thank you
Serenata
PS: I even tried 2 different brands of dog food

Hopefully by now she is eating - she'll get so hungry that she will eat her dog food again.

If you'd like to trick her at first, mix in some chicken or beef stock into her dry food and gradually decrease the amount of broth.

Is your dog drinking water? Maybe he has a stomach upset I would call the vet. Or you could try giving him some dog jerky. This must taste like regular jerky it smells terrible but my dog like a small piece for a treat.

I've seen something similar to this on a dog behaviour program here in the UK. It was a Yorkshire terrier who was fed on the table, from the plates and with the forks of the owners - it was really disgusting. They had the same type of problem with it refusing to eat its own food.

If I remember right they tricked it into thinking it was getting food from the table by using a plate and pretending to eat the food themselves. They might have started by pretending it was from the table.

I'm glad we have the opposite problem - trying to get or six rather large dogs not to eat all the time!!!! 3 of them are 5month old pups who are always starving - lik they're wasting away - not!

You should probably have your dog checked by a vet just to make sure the loss of appetite isn't due to illness. Five days is quite a long time for a small dog to go without eating.

If you've been feeding her dry food, adding a small amount of canned dog food might make it more appealing.

My own dogs were not very interested in eating after I switched them to a weight control formula dog food. I've been adding a small amount of "Iams Savory Sauce" to their food and now their happy eaters again. It adds a gravy taste to dry food without adding a lot of fat and calories.

Hi,
Thank you for suggestions. The dog finally ate after I poured steak juice over her food. She is expecting the steak juice now at every meal. I guess I will try cutting down slowly and see if that works. I did take the dog to the Vet. All the tests came out OK.

Thanks again

Serenata....

I wonder...Just as an experimental curiosity...Would you be so good as to answer me some questions....?

How old is your dog?

How many times a day do you feed her?

Does she eat her meals before you (as a family )do, or after?

When you take her for walks, who goes through the door first - the walker or the dog?

When any of you go absent, what is her response upon your return?

Does she have any annoying, perpetual habits?

If you go up/down stairs, does she lead, or does she follow?

is she permitted upon the couch, your bed, into your bedroom...?

To whom is she more responsive in the family?
You, your husband or one of the children? (Excuse me for making assumptions...I know nothing of your family situation, so I don't mean to pry....)

If you have the time, I'd love to know the answers to the above....
It could be the answer to everything.... <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Thank you for your concern.

My dog is 1 year old. We feed her twice a day and she eats the same time we do. I make sure that I am the first to walk out the door as I need to be the leader. During our absence upon returning she is very excited and will urinate if my husband goes to pet her. That is the biggest challenge with her. My husband found out that he was allergic to the dogs after we got her. We are in the process of training her to walk with us. She is pretty good at following and will not take off even when off the leash. She is the most responsive to me. She only barks at the door when she hears my husband coming, and she gets overly excited.

My son had a pathological fear of dogs and no therapy was helping until we got this dog. He tends to be over protective with her. He cuddles up with her on the couch, but she has her own bed to sleep in.
She is a very affectionate dog that loves the attention. We are grateful for helping our son get over his fears of dogs.

my grandmother had a husky mix who did this. She ended up microwaving the dogfood for 1 second every day, the dog thought he was getting table food, LOL
