I'm considering a hosting service that offers you subdomains.

But I'm confused. I realize the subdomains point like this:
subdomain.maindomain.com

but do I still own the subdomain name? Or should I register it too?

If someone goes to www.subdomain, will that automatically forward it to subdomain.maindomain.com?

the maindomain is the only name you need to register
